In the UK it is a legal requirement for everyone who undertakes spraying of professional pesticides to hold a pesticide certificate of competence, otherwise known as a pesticide license.
In addition to the NPTC pesticide units listed here, other pesticide courses are available, including granule applicators (PA4) and hand held applicators application to water (PA6AW).
Each unit is of 1 day’s duration. NPTC assessments are arranged by us and take place on another date after the training course itself. We provide all equipment and PPE needed for training and assessment for units PA1 and PA6 held at our site; you just need to bring your wellies.
Experienced operators may wish to attend our courses as refresher training.

This course covers hand held applicators – hydraulic nozzle and / or rotary atomiser types. The equipment included in this test module is any hand held and / or pedestrian controlled sprayer of the type specified above.
What will you learn?
- Develop knowledge covering the requirements of current legislation.
- Apply pesticides safely and efficiently with a hand held applicator fitted with hydraulic nozzles.
- Identify and select appropriate nozzles, carry out machine preparation and calibration.
- Operate the equipment in compliance with current legislation and codes of practice.
- Clean equipment and dispose of unwanted pesticides and containers.
- Identify and rectify faults and recognise conditions when spraying is inadvisable.
Certification
Assessment will be a practical test of skills.
Candidates need to have passed Unit PA1.

This is a full day attendance and assessed course where you’ll learn the theory and practical skills to perform first aid until the medical professionals take over.
This course builds on the required skills, knowledge and understanding from Emergency First Aid at Work to give you the critical breadth and depth you need in the Forestry industry.
At the end of the course you’ll receive a Qualsafe Level 3 Award Certificate in Emergency First Aid at Work and a Qualsafe Level 3 Award Certificate in Forestry First Aid +F.
The course has been developed to comply with the Forestry Commission +F as per the First Aid at Work – Forestry Commission Policy and in consultation with Forestry Industry Safety Accord (FISA).

Who should attend?
If you are over the age of 16 and wish to develop your knowledge, understanding, and skills and require proof of competence within your field of expertise then this course is suitable for you.
It doesn’t matter if you are entering a place of work or have already established yourselves in a role. You may already be using your skills across a range of trees and timber operations however, this qualification will enable you to become a more confident worker meeting the current standards of good working practice.
What will you learn?
By the end of this course, you will:
- Gain knowledge and understanding across a range of forestry and arboriculture functions and activities
- Be able to work effectively in a forestry and arboriculture environment, both independently and as part of a team
- Be able to review and develop your own practices, and carry out a range of practical forestry and arboriculture tasks, to the required industry standard
- Improve your awareness of health and safety legislation and how individuals can contribute to the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) agenda
- Obtain occupational competence and/or licence to practice
